The luxury liner Prinsendam a Holland America Line ship carrying 319 passengers and 203 crew members catches fire during a violent storm. On October 11 1980 the Prinsendam capsized and sunk only 7 years after being built. It was somewhat smaller than average size for its day carrying about 350 passengers and 200 crew.
On board were 571 passengers and crew sailing into a storm which would soon claim another ship. Soviet cruise ship Mikhail Lermontov sinking on 16 February 1986. This Italian cruise ship ran aground on a reef off the coast of Tuscany Italy in January 2012 and toppled onto its side.

There were no fatalities and no serious injuries. The Oceanos was a Greek cruise liner sailing the South African coast from Cape Town to Durban passing Coffee Bay off the Wild Coast an area known for treacherous currents and ship wrecks. Long before Captain Schettino smashed the Costa Concordia into the rocks off of the coast of Giglio another captain of a passenger cruise ship slammed his vessel into the rock and sank the ship.
