The MSC has agreed that future large passenger ships should be designed for improved survivability based on the time-honoured principle that a ship is its own best lifeboat. The ship was built in 1998 and refurbished this year. Passengers were not injured but were sent to live boats because of the risk.
The incident left one person dead and 14 others injured. The blue sky soon after the 855-foot vessel cleared the port of Miami and headed for what was to have been a first-leg cruise.
